Signwriting is a writing system which uses visual symbols to represent the hand shapes, movements, and facial expressions of signed languages. It is an "alphabet" - a list of symbols used to write any signed language in the world.
The final execution is made by hand using brushes known as quills and similar signwriting 'pencils' and chiselled brushes. Specialist enamels are also employed to fashion a long-lasting finish along with the traditional use of gold leaf. Many use vinyl masking screens in order to replicate traditional signwriting.
Traditional Signwriting - hand lettering, brushwork, chalkboard art, unusual surfaces.
Signwriters design, manufacture and install signs, including advertising signs for shops. Traditional signwriters use methods closely related to those of their forebears in this craft and do not depend on technology - they are able to set out a sign. Many use vinyl masking screens in order to replicate traditional signwriting.
